It is a photocopy technique. The image is printed as a negative onto glossy photo paper. Ironed onto the plate. The paper is then soaked off. Some photo papers are better than others, it is just a case of experimenting.Once the initial image has been etched I have added an acrylic aquatint to increase tones.You might find this web site of interest:http://www.dr-lex.be/hardware/tonertransfer.html
Kevin, is the toner transfer method you use the same as ironing a photocopy onto the metal plate? I have used this technique with waterless lithography before and I know it has also been used as a resist for etching.
